Loco White

It rather sounds like a dream that Bodegas Canopy has found an old vineyard of white Garnacha in the area of Mentrida because this variety was only believed to exist in Catalunya and to a lesser extent in Rioja wine regions. But after 5 years of work and illusion, understanding this difficult and delicate grape variety, the dream of Canopy came true.

“Loco” is the flagship, low production, reward-winning white wine from Bodegas Canopy. It is from the small production area called Valley al Alberche, in D.O. Mentrida located in Central Spain, South West of Madrid. The vineyard is a small area of only 1.1 hectare and of sandy soil, with poor yields of about 2500kg. The vines have an average age of 65 years. The harvest is done manually.

After a fermentation in stainless steel tanks for 12 days, the wine remains during a period of 8 months in used (3 years old) French oak barrels and 6 bottles in bottle for ageing.

The curious packaging representing a bottle in a straight jacket stands for the fact that it is hard – even “crazy” to grow white Garnacha in that particular area of production. Elderly locals say that the winegrower who planted this vineyard was called “loco” (crazy), the same as locals would call Canopy’s winegrowers for their intent to revive and take care of the old vineyard with the idea to create a high level white wine which would be a surpise to the market, based on a grape variety which had not received much recognition until then.
